while New Vision ranks better than Daily Monitor in Pagerank (based on worthy links to the site), and in alexa overall rank, Daily Monitor has more sites linking into it according to alexia. It is obvious these rankings are not exactly using same metrics nor perfect. You will also notice that Daily Nation is ranked far ahead of New Vision and Daily Monitor websites in alexa, despite the fact that it was ranked 13th (compared to 4th for New Vision and 17th for Daily Monitor ) by the http://www.4imn.com ranking that started all this debate.

Website rank not newspaper website rank

You therefore need to look deeper into these rankings to get the useful information from them. For example it is important for any website to know which of its pages or categories are popular and where most of its traffic comes from (country, time of day or night etc). It is also important to understand the traffic progression, i.e. are you improving or reducing, and in which areas. You also need to understand the metrics of other related websites (or if you prefer call them competitors) to really give meaning to your own traffic measure in informing strategy.

More importantly, with many people getting their news from Google, facebook, twitter, linkedin, youtube among other popular websites, and not necessarily from “newspaper” websites, it is not enough to feel good that your website is the best newspaper website, or was ranked best based on interaction with its content directly from the website (as opposed to being popular on the social networks or search engine results for example).
